Cuernavaca trip, July 1st:

We assembled Friday morning in the square outside where the wedding was to be held. The wedding was scheduled for Tuesday, but they were already busy loading the church up with flowers.

Our actual destination was a hotel nearby where we were all having breakfast. Our party had grown to include the Groom's college roommates, and those are roommate Kiyoshi's kids, Maddie and Drew. They had just arrived and hadn't yet been told to "no molestar los aves."

Los aves included this pretty macaw, who despite his complete lack of movement, is a real bird and not made of wood.

Also on the grounds was this adorable little house. I forget the history we were told, but I imagine it was a playhouse back when the hotel was some rich man's villa. That's Kiyoshi in front of the house.

Here's the surreal interior. The smaller among us were completely delighted.

There were also crowned cranes.

It seems like I've taken this picture before. Catherine liked to play in every small body of water she came across. I think she's launching ships made out of some seed pod that grew nearby.

The blue macaw had a friend, the green macaw. He was hanging upside down from the bars of his perch, looking at some of his carrots, which he had dropped. When I put the carrots back in his tray, one of those grackles came and stole it. Seriously, this time.

I like pizza. You know that.

That afternoon, we went to the Cuauhnahuac Regional Museum in Cortes' summer palace. It was interesting to learn about regional history, though I wish I read more spanish.

From the museum, we could look out on some other government buildings. That's the state seal of Morelos. Ohio also grows corn, but features wheat on its seal.

The best feature of the museum, for me, was this giant mural by Diego Rivera. It was about the subjugation of the native people by the spaniards and subsequent efforts towards independence.

Other panels featured portraits of Emilano Zapata and Jose Morelos. Morelos looked suspiciously like Diego Rivera in this rendition. Hey, the internet says that I'm not the only one to pick up on that!

Here's my sister Liz, silhouetted in front of the city skyline.

And her in front of her favorite part of the mural, where a jaguarman stabs an armored spaniard with a stone knife.

Back at the hotel, I found this awesome slug.

We ate our midafternoon meal nearby. It was one of the few places we ate that didn't have an english menu, so I had to get enchiladas suiza, I think.

In the evening, we went back to the artisan's market. Here's a tree in the center, inscribed with "No tiren basura, por favor." I know what that means. It means "please buy a belt."

Back again at the hotel, we had a little toast to my cousin John. His brother and sisters and college roomates told stories about him, while he stood by and blushed.

Pictured are, if I remember right, Gaby's UPenn friend Armando and his wife, flanking my sister Alisa.

Here's John, blushing.
